A replacement replacing a replacement?

That's exactly what's happening at LA's Mark Taper Forum, where Moises Kaufman's play about Oscar Wilde on trial, Gross Indecency -- which has been a huge Off-Broadway hit at NY's Minetta Lane Theatre for the past six months -- will replace Anthony Clarvoe's Ambition Facing West in the Feb. 19 to Mar. 29 time slot.

A few months ago, Ambition Facing West had been chosen as a replacement for Ellen McLaughlin's Tongue of a Bird. Now both Ambition and Tongue are being rescheduled for the 1998-99 season.

The remainder of the Mark Taper Forum season remains unchanged: Room Service with the Flying Karamazov Brothers continues through Dec. 21; Charlayne Woodard's one-woman show, Neat, is scheduled to run from Jan. 4-Feb. 1; Anna Deavere Smith's new work, House Arrest, First Edition, is slated for Apr. 5-May 31; and an adaptation of John Irving's The Cider House Rules is on schedule for June 13-Sept. 27.
