Heading the cast of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta will be Brian Sutherland as The Pirate King, Jennifer Baldwin Peden as Mabel, Jan Neuberger as Ruth, Richard S. Iglewski as Major-General Stanley, Barbara Bryne as Queen Victoria, Christina Baldwin as Edith, Dan Callaway as Frederic, Michael Farina as Samuel, Tinia Moulder as Kate, Kersten Rodau as Isabel and Jim Lichtscheidl as The Sergeant of Police. Directed by Guthrie artistic director Joe Dowling, Pirates of Penzance will play the theatre's mainstage May 8-June 13. The production's ensemble comprises Miguel Angel, Lauren Asheim, Roger Barbieri, Dieter Bierbrauer, Michael Buchanan, Ross Crutchlow, Jonathan Day, Brian Flanagan, Tony Vierling, Suzanne Warmanen and Justin Winterhalter. Keith Mahoney, Ann Michels and Aaron Michael Norris are the show's swings.
With a book and lyrics by William S. Gilbert and music by Arthur Sullivan, some of the operetta's songs include "When Frederic Was a Little Lad," "Poor Wandering One!," "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General," "A Rollicking Band of Pirates We" and "No, I Am Brave." The most recent Broadway revival of Pirates played the Uris Theatre in 1981. Directed by Wilford Leach, the musical featured a starry cast led by Kevin Kline, Estelle Parsons, Linda Rondstadt, George Rose and Rex Smith.
