News Hairspray Cleans Up at Drama Desk Awards; Take Me Out Is Outstanding Play Hairspray was the big winner at the 2003 Drama Desk Awards. It won ten prizes including Outstanding Musical, Actor, Actress, Featured Actor, Direction, Lyrics, Music, Book, Costume Design and Orchestrations.

Harvey Fierstein won the Outstanding Actor in a Musical prize in a tie with Antonio Banderas of Nine, his chief competition. Marissa Jaret Winokur won for Actress in a Musical, beating out her main rival, Bernadette Peters of Gypsy.

Richard Greenberg's Take Me Out took the title for Outstanding Play and Long Day's Journey Into Night, another big winner with three trophies, was named Outstanding Revival of a Play. Both were heavy favorites going in to the ceremony, as was Hairspray.

The only toss-up in the four major categories was Outstanding Revival of a Musical, where Nine proved the stonger in a contest with Gypsy. Nine's Jane Krakowski also took home a win.

Twyla Tharp won for Outstanding Choreographer for her work on the Billy Joel musical Movin' Out—that show's only award. Eddie Izzard of Joe Egg and Vanessa Redgrave of Long Day's Journey Into Night prevailed as Outstanding Actor and Actress in a Play. Redgrave's sister, Lynn, currently starring in Talking Heads Off-Broadway, was picked for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play.

La Boheme triumphed in three design categories: set design of a musical, lighting and sound. Two-time Tony Award winner and current star of Nine, Chita Rivera, hosted the 2003 Drama Desk Awards May 18 at the Concert Hall in F.H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.

The Drama Desk is an organization of theatre critics, editors and reporters. In a change from the past seven years, the May 18 ceremony was not broadcast live on NY1 or rebroadcast on PBS' Channel 13. Instead, the event was webcast by TheaterMania.
