News   Hath No Fury: Kate Burton and Tony Goldwyn Open The Water's Edge Off-Broadway
Kate Burton stars as a woman scorned opposite Tony Goldwyn as her long estranged ex-husband when Theresa Rebeck's The Water's Edge opens its Off-Broadway premiere at Second Stage Theatre June 14.

Will Frears (Omnium Gatherum, Terrorism) directs the New York debut of the work by the playwright of The Sceneand Bad Dates. The play — which also stars Mamie Gummer, Austin Lysy and Katharine Powell — began previews May 23 at the midtown Manhattan stage for a run scheduled through July 9.

Recent Tony Award nominee Burton (The Constant Wife) and film star Goldwyn ("Reckless," "Ghost") headline the play in which a woman and her two children live in their inherited lakeside home until the long-estranged ex-husband shows up to claim the house. The drama of Greek proportions is laid out over a series of revelations that occur following the reunion.

Gummer, last seen Off-Broadway in Mr. Marmalade appears with Lysy (Other People and Manic Flight Reaction at Playwrights Horizons) and Powell (Brooke Berman's Smashing) in the New York staging.

Burton ("Grey's Anatomy," Hedda Gabler, The Elephant Man) appeared in the debut of The Water's Edge at the 2004 Williamstown Theatre Festival with castmate Lysy opposite Michael Gaston, Gretchen Cleevely and Fiona Gallagher.

Frears — director of David Marshall Grant's recent Pen — has also staged Terrorism, Where We're Born, God Hates The Irish and Rebeck and Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros' 2004 Pulitzer Prize finalist Omnium Gatherum. The design team for The Water's Edge will feature Alexander Dodge (set), Junghyun Georgia Lee (costume), Frances Aronson (lighting) and Vincent Olivieri (sound). Original music featured in the production is by Michael Friedman.

Playwright Rebeck has previously collaborated with Second Stage on her plays The Family of Mann, Loose Knit and Spike Heels. Her recent Humana Festival hit The Scene will play in Second Stage's upcoming new season.
