News Heather Christian and the Arbornauts Star in North at LaMaMa Jan. 18 LaMaMa e.t.c. heads North, as the new work for the stage from vocalist Heather Christian begins its limited engagement Jan. 18.

Christian conceived, directs and stars in the work, which explores the nature of love, distance and longing. Joining Christian for the production is her band, the Arbornauts – comprising Chris Giarmo, Hannah Heller, Mike Mikos and Raky Sastri.

According to press notes, Christian has created a "baroque infused… crystalline outdoor living room with a moving visual circus of oddities and silhouettes that includes 12 narrating television screens, a puppet show and a moving arboretum."

The musical soundscape for North – including such instruments as the accordion, glockenspiel, harmonium, megaphone, melodica, typewriter and violin – is made up of pre-1700 classical pieces, original music and post-1960's pop that incorporates an eclectic range of music from Carmina Burana to Cyndi Lauper and Christian's original pieces.

The design team for North features Jay Ryan (lighting design), Pandora Andrea Gastelum (costume design), Courtland Premo and Colin Campbell (set design). Christian and the Arbornauts have created the movement and choreography for North.

North will play a limited engagement at LaMaMa e.t.c. through Feb. 2. An official opening has been set for Jan. 20. Tickets are available by calling (212) 475-7710 or by visiting www.lamama.org. LaMaMa e.t.c. is located at 74A East 4th Street in Manhattan.
