The new series, aiming for a summer debut, will center around a nationwide talent search and a select group of contestants who will compete at "HSM"-themed challenges while at a music conservatory.

The trade magazine notes that the top prize for the show is being tightly guarded but, similar to other reality competition shows, contestants will be eliminated on a weekly basis with one performer being crowned champion at the finale.

Stars from the Disney Channel original movies are expected to appear in the show.

High School Musical centers on the unlikely friendship that evolves between the jock Troy and brainiac Gabriella at a karaoke contest. Little did the two know that she would be transferring to his school. The duo decide — against their friends' wishes and to the dismay of school stars (a drama queen and her twin brother) — to audition for the high school musical.

The original movie has spawned a sequel and a forthcoming feature film as well as stage shows, a concert tour, ice shows, a national tour and more.
