3-Legged Dog, a New York City-based theatre company known for their integration of high technology into the world of live theatre, have taken their latest show to Off-Broadway's Signature Theatre. The company's Automatic Earth plays there, July 10-Aug. 1, officially opening July 15.
The large-scale, multimedia piece, written by artistic director Kevin Cunningham, traces the story of Vining Hamke, a man searching for an impossibly perfect landscape, one which would bring logic and reason to his mind after the man experiences a brain injury. His odyssey takes him around America, from a New York State Mental Hospital to a Texas nudie bar, introducing him to an array of characters including a cannibal, a topless dancer and a mad Houston artist.
Cunningham developed Earth from his work with violent psychotic patients in high-security hospital wards and from his interest in non linear dynamics as it applies to biological systems. Cunningham worked with one of the world's leading experts in hurricane dynamics to create some of the complex graphics woven into the piece. After the Off Broadway production, Earth will move South of the Border, to Mexico City at the Centro Nacional de las Artes.
