Among the first-time winners were also first-time Broadway performers such as Barkin and Larroquette, who gave heartfelt speeches when accepting their Tonys at the Beacon Theatre.

Barkin was the first actress to take home an award, and thanked playwright Larry Kramer for what she called the "proudest moments of [her] career." Other highlights included James' emotional acceptance in which she dedicated the award to her "Poppy," and Sutton Foster's second Tony win, in which she tearfully thanked her dresser of nine years, Julian Havard, who will be moving to pursue his dreams as an artist.
