The Hills Centre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar, now playing at His Majesty's Theatre in Perth, West Australia, signals another achievement for a company which combines both professional and non-professional talent in its cast and crews. The Hills Centre, an entertainment complex in the western suburbs of Sydney, is gaining recognition for its pro-am musical revivals. Superstar is the second of their productions to travel to interstate capital cities after an initial Sydney season. In 1997 they successfully transferred 42nd Street to Hobart, Tasmania, with established theatre stars Jack Webster and Jan Adele in leading roles. Local performers were recruited for minor roles and ensemble.

A similar arrangement has been adopted for the Perth season of Superstar, which is a co-production with the Perth Theatre Trust. Of the four professional leads, former heavy-metal rock star Angry Anderson is the most notable. No stranger to the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical, Anderson reprises the role of King Herod after his portrayal in the high-tech concert version which toured Australia in 1992.

Jesus Christ Superstar opened in Perth on March 14. Bookings on (61-8) 94841133.
