News Hollywood Bowl Celebrates Gershwins July 12-16; Laine, McDonald, Mitchell and More Featured The Hollywood Bowl will offer five evenings of concerts celebrating the work of composers George and Ira Gershwin, July 12-16.

A "Gershwin Celebration," which kicks off the series, will be presented July 12 and 14 featuring the Los Angeles Philharmonic — under the direction of Leonard Slatkin — and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. The 8 PM concerts will include "I Got Rhythm" and the Gershwins' "Concert in F," among others.

"The Gershwins in Hollywood" is the title of the July 13 concert, which will boast Gershwin tunes that were featured in some of RKO and MGM's most famous films. Bill Charlap will be the musical director for the 8 PM evening, which will include special guests Oleta Adams, Jon Hendricks, Cleo Laine and Barbara Morrison. The Bill Charlap Trio will also be featured as well as Jeff Clayton, Bob Efford, Wycliffe Gordon, Nicholas Payton, Houston Person, Kenny Washington and Peter Washington.

And, as previously announced, Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Wayne Brady will take part in "The Gershwin Weekend: Porgy and Bess" July 15 and 16. The 8:30 PM concerts will include excerpts from Porgy as well as "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Lullaby." The singers will be backed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Slatkin, and the evening will also feature Jean-Yves Thibaudet on piano and the Paul Smith Singers.

George and Ira Gershwin's Broadway credits include Lady Be Good!, Tip-Toes, Oh Kay!, Strike Up the Band, Funny Face, Girl Crazy and Of Thee I Sing. Their songbook boasts such tunes as "Fascinating Rhythm," "The Man I Love," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "But Not for Me" and "They Can't Take That Away from Me."
