Terry Ronald's novel is set backstage at a school production of the musical Oliver! with a contemporary twist. David Starr, a working-class lad in 1970s suburban London, gets cast in the female lead, Nancy, in the production. Along the way he strikes up a friendship with the captain of the soccer team, which looks like it may ripen into something more.
Elliot Davis, who co-wrote Loserville, is working on the libretto.
According to a report in U.K.'s The Stage, the musical is currently in development and planning a 2017 opening. Drew and Stiles announced Becoming Nancy at the press event for a more immediately upcoming children's show, The 3 Little Pigs, due to play matinees Aug. 5 through Sept. 6 at the Palace Theatre in the West End.
Also in the works for Crewe and Stiles, a new adaptation of The Wind in the Willows.
