After receiving over 40 submissions from young Houstonites, the Alley Theatre has chosen four plays to be produced Aug. 6-7 on the Neuhaus Arena Stage. The Houston Young Playwrights Exchange (HYPE) gives young playwrights an opportunity to develop their scripts with the Alley artistic staff and stage their works for two performances, free to the public.
This year's plays are:
• Moment Before the Truth, written by 17-year-old Hwan-Joon Choi, takes a fictionalized look at the Littleton tragedy and, especially, the way the media handled the event. Travis Mader directs.
• So This Was Love... by 16-year-old Andrea Davulis examines the life of Darla, young woman who reveals her hopes for a loving relationship in the wake of an abusive one through a film documentary. Mader directs.
• Strike Zone by 19-year-old Jason Price is based in the real life characters surrounding his father's sports memorabilia store, The Strike Zone. Rene Wells directs.
• Beating a DEAD Horse: A Complete Delusion in One Act by 19 year-old Travis Johns takes place at an absurd and funny meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous, where the four members discuss their lives, loves and fears.
Tickets are free but must be reserved by calling the Alley Theatre Box Office at (713) 228-8421.
