Off-Broadway's Debbie Does Dallas, drawn from the classic adult film of the same name, is, on the surface, a satiric spoof of one curvaceous woman's success story in the world of professional cheerleading.

Audiences at the Jane Street Theatre are howling at the new play with music, but Sherie Rene Scott (Aida, The Last 5 Years), who stars in the title role, agrees the show does deal with serious issues, like feminism and chauvinism.

"It's interesting that people come and say, 'Oh, it's just fun, it's just light entertainment' and other people go, 'Oh no, I was thinking about a lot of the things that were said in the days and weeks that followed and what it all means,'" Scott said in the Oct. 29-Nov. 4 Playbill On-Line Brief Encounter interview. "I think people are having an amazing time. I've never been in a show where people laughed harder and longer and more spontaneously and are more and more surprised. So, that feels really good. And it feels good to be a part of something that, just like Last 5 Years, I believe in and I'm proud of. Just in a completely different way."
