With the apparent withdrawal of Stephen "Billy Elliot" Daldry and the Donmar Warehouse's Sam Mendes from the race, it looks as if Nicholas Hytner is the favorite to take over Britain's most prestigious theatre job when Trevor Nunn comes to the end of his contract. Others touted for the top job are Jude Kelly, John Caird, Howard Davies and dark horse Simon Russell Beale, but Hytner, who directed both the stage (at the National's Lyttleton Theatre) and screen version of Alan Bennett's The Madness of George III and also has a wealth of experience with opera, is thought to be the most likely choice.
