News In DC's Helen Hayes Awards, Bounce Brothers Kind and McGillin Are Rivals; Ceremony Is May 10 Nominees for the 2004 Helen Hayes Awards, celebrating the best of resident and non-resident theatre in Washington, DC, will gather May 10 at the Kennedy Center for the awards ceremony.

The rival siblings of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Bounce, Howard McGillin and Richard Kind, are among Hayes nominees, as is Michele Pawk for her turn in the Kennedy Center/Goodman Theatre production from 2003 (a cast album was recently released on the Nonesuch label).

Also nommed for work in the 2003 calendar year, in varying categories, are Michael Learned (for Elizabeth the Queens), Regina Taylor (Crowns), Ken Ludwig, Everett Quinton and Alice Ripley (Shakespeare in Hollywood), Brenda Braxton (for Chicago), Lewis Cleale (for 1776), Steven Berkoff (for Shakespeare's Villains), A Midsummer Night's Dream and Richard III (both by Shakespeare Theatre), Matt Bogart and Kate Suber (both for Arena Stage's Camelot). The cast of Signature Theatre's 110 in the Shade also fared well, snagging multiple acting nominations.

Arena Stage's co-production of Crowns earned a hatful of nominations, too.

For those who think recognizing new works that premiere far from the roar of New York is the most important part of awards like the Hayes, the following plays were nominated for The Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play or Musical: Rachel Havrelock's From Tel Aviv to Ramallah: A Beatbox Journey (Theater J), Neena Beber's Jump/Cut (Theater J and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company), Ken Ludwig's Shakespeare in Hollywood (Arena Stage), Matthew Burnett's Theophilus North (Arena Stage and Geva Theatre Center), Kira Lallas' Translations of Xhosa (Olney Theatre Center for the Arts, as part of its Potomac Theatre Festival), Keith Bridges' Watching Left (Charter Theatre) and Chris Stezin's what dogs do (Charter Theatre).
