News In the Heights' Miranda Receives Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award Lin-Manuel Miranda, the composer and lyricist of the upcoming Broadway musical In the Heights, has been awarded the 2007 Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award.

During its twelfth annual awards reception Dec. 12 at Lincoln Center's Allen Room, ASCAP presented Miranda with the award, which recognizes emerging artists in the musical theatre. In the Heights cast members, led by Olga Merediz, paid tribute to Miranda with a performance from the musical in which he is also featured. In the Heights is scheduled to make a Broadway transfer to the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Feb. 14, 2008, with an official opening set for March 9.

The musical features a book by Pulitzer Prize finalist Quiara Alegría, which centers on Usnavi, a hip-hop-friendly Dominican who runs a bodega in Washington Heights. He serves as witness (and the audience's guide) to the diverse neighborhood, teeming with characters who keep reaching for American success, identity and happiness.

The Dec. 12 ASCAP Awards Reception also honored singer-songwriter John Mellencamp with its Champion Award in recognition of his outstanding use of music in the service of humanity.
