According to the Transport Group, Once Upon a Mattress is a raucous musical retelling of the classic story "The Princess and the Pea." It features music by the late Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Barer and Dean Fuller.
Performances are set to run Nov. 29, 2015-Jan. 3, 2016, at the Abrons Arts Center.
In June 2013, The Transport Group staged a one-night-only concert presentation of the musical starring Hoffman and Epperson. It was directed by TG artistic director Jack Cummings III, who returns to direct the full run of the revival.
Once Upon a Mattress first played Off-Broadway in 1959 before transferring to Broadway that same year. It was nominated for five Tony Awards. Transport Group also announced that its 2015 season will include the world-premiere musical The Blonde Streak by Dan Lipton and David Rossmer. Cummings will direct the production that is slated to run July 5-Aug. 16 at Theatre 79.
Here's how the premiere is billed: "When Walter, a hopelessly romantic chef, gets jilted on his wedding day, he takes off in the matrimonial limo with his best friend and his favorite ex to try to figure out why. Channeling contemporary off-beat comedies, the Apatow-esque The Blonde Streak is the roadtrip of a mid-lifetime for these three 30-somethings, forced to deal with the endless and ageless struggle of growing up."
Transport Group is a Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and OBIE Award-winning theatre company that was founded by Jack Cummings III in 2001. They have produced 23 shows comprised of 12 new works and 11 revivals.
