Perhaps the song "Jazz Up Your Lingerie" isn't the first tune that comes to mind when movie musicals are mentioned. But Claudette Colbert and Miriam Hopkins sang the number in the 1931 romantic comedy, "The Smiling Lieutenant."
Now the risque number gives name to the 42nd Street Moon's annual fundraiser, this year a collection of movie musical songs from the 30's and 40's, as well as some adult gems that snuck into the films before the Production Code Authority and Roman Catholic Legion of Decency "cleaned up" movie-making in the 30's. "Jazz Up Your Lingerie" runs March 2-5 at the Eureka Theatre.
Performing pieces from Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rogers & Hart, Busby Berkeley and others are Brandon Adams (also the evening's musical director), Caroline Altman, Bill Fahrner, Lesley Hamilton, Martin Lewis, Meg Mackay, Greg MacKellan, Dylan McBride, Richard Pardini, Lisa Peers, Susan Powers and Stephanie Rhoads.
Tickets are $35-$25. The Eureka Theatre is located at 215 Jackson Street at Battery. For reservations, call (415) 441-3687.
