Rehearsals will begin in November for the first European production of the musical Jekyll & Hyde. The premiere is planned for February 1999 in the German city of Bremen.
The German-language production will not duplicate the Broadway version. It will include several scenes and songs not performed in the present New York staging.
At a press conference on April 2, the production company "New Metropol Bremen" announced plans to invest around 30 million dollars to convert a former swimming pool complex located in the city center into a musical theater with 1500 seating capacity.
The producers stated that if a 70% capacity is maintained during the eight performance-a-week schedule, approximately 80 million dollars will flow yearly into the local economy.
