News Jesus Christ Superstar, With Ben Vereen, Rocks Houston Beginning Aug. 19 Ben Vereen, who received his first Tony Award nomination for playing Judas in the Broadway premiere of Jesus Christ Superstar, returns to the iconic rock musical as Pilate beginning Aug. 19 at the Musical Theatre of Houston.

Vereen headlines the two-performance engagement of Superstar Aug. 19-20 at the Wortham Brown Theatre. Aaron Callies directs and choreographs.

In addition to Vereen as Pilate, the principal cast includes Sam Brown as Jesus, Jacqueline Grady as Mary Magdalene and Tommie Harper as Judas.

The cast also features Dillon Wright (King Herod), Damon Price (Caiaphas), Dominique Di Felice (Annas), John Ryan Del Bosque (Simon), Chioke Coreathers (Peter), Gustavo Gomez (Philip), Enrique Cavazos (Andrew), Ryan Smith (Bartholomew), Julian Peraza (James of Zebedee), Erich Polley (James of Alphaeus), Donald Collier (Thaddeus), Matthew Kriger (Thomas), Chad McCallon (John), Seth Cunningham (Matthew), and Steve Hale, Ted Doolittle and David Bermudez as the High Priests.

The ensemble includes Lori Callaway, Tamara Harper, Maisha Kelm, Megan Blackmon, Meredith Mearns, Kim Truncale, Nyseli Vega, Ashley Johnson, Julia Green, Courtney Chilton, Elisa Regulski, Anna Teresa Zimmermann, Pamela M. Moore, Adrian Coco Anderson, Lendsey Kersey, Rachel Paul,Jennifer Malisheski, Alexander Alvarado, Alfred Nwagbo, Ryan Bullock, Jeromy Henry and Steve Johnson.

The production has scenic design by Boris Kaplun , costume design by Claudia Rodriquez, lighting design by David Gipson and musical direction by Jacob Carr.

Jesus Christ Superstar has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The sung-through rock work premiered on Broadway in 1971.

A Tony Award winner for his role in Pippin, Vereen has also appeared on Broadway in Wicked, Fosse, Chicago, Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair and I'm Not Rappaport. He was also featured in the television miniseries "Roots."
