According to a press representative for the theatre company, Two River has commissioned Iconis and Tracz to adapt "Be More Chill" and is working with the duo for an upcoming private reading, as part of the developmental process.
Additional details, including production dates, have not yet been announced.
Playbill.com reported that the two have been adapting "Be More Chill" for the stage in the Playbill.com Contemporary Musical Theatre Songwriters You Should Know.
The 2004 novel "Be More Chill" centers on high school student Jeremy Heere, who — in hopes to boost his popularity status and ward off bullies — obtains a "squip," a quantum computer in pill form that can communicate directly with your brain after being ingested.
Iconis, whose Black Suits is currently playing at the Center Theatre Group, also penned the Drama Desk Award-nominated Bloodsong of Love, ReWrite and The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks as well as the theatrical concert Things to Ruin. His songs have also appeared on the second season of the NBC musical drama "Smash." For more on Two River, visit TwoRiverTheater.org.
