News Joel Grey to Take Medical Leave From Broadway's Wicked Joel Grey, who has played the Wizard of Oz in Wicked since that Broadway musical opened last fall, will take a medical leave of absence to recover from a recent bout of bronchitis, a spokesman confirmed.

Grey's understudy, Sean McCourt, will play the role during the absence. "All of us at Wicked love Joel," says producer David Stone, "and look forward to his speedy recovery and quick return to the show."

McCourt's credits include Bat Boy, Titanic, A Man of No Importance and The Castle.
