Presented by the Forest Theater Guild, Hamlet is co-directed by Barrymore, Nick Hovick and Larry Welch. The production begins June 28 and runs through July 25.
Barrymore's grandfather, Hollywood legend John Barrymore, was referred to as "The American Hamlet" and was the first American-born actor to be accepted by the British for his portrayal of the Prince of Denmark.
"I told (the Forest Theater Guild producers) I'm not afraid to play Hamlet," Barrymore III said to the Monterey Herald. "And here we go."
Barrymore has performed Shakespeare in the past, including a show at the Globe Playhouse for Shakespearean Theatre in West Hollywood.
The cast includes John David Whalen, who will play Laertes. The creative team includes producer Rebecca Barrymore, set designer Nicole Bryant Stephens and costume designer Tinna Hannas. More information can be found by visiting foresttheaterguild.org.
