The Vineyard Theatre has announced that the 2017–18 season will feature the world premiere of The Beast in the Jungle, which will reunite the team behind the acclaimed Scottsboro Boys: composer John Kander, director and choreographer Susan Stroman, and playwright David Thompson. The production, set for spring 2018, is the only show of the season to be announced by the Off-Broadway theatre.
The Beast in the Jungle delves into the mind and life of John Marcher, a man preoccupied by the belief that a great catastrophe awaits him. Adapted from Henry James’ novella of the same name, the story examines the meaning of life, as well as love, loneliness, and regret.
According to the Vineyard, the new musical will feature a “swirling, waltz-inspired instrumental score,” and choreography that blends ballet and contemporary dance. Performance dates and casting have not yet been announced.
Full details of the Vineyard’s 35th anniversary season, including two additional productions, will be announced at a later date. Kander’s musical Kid Victory also debuted at the Off-Broadway theatre as part of the 2016–17 season.
