News Jonathan Groff to Join Alfred Molina for L.A. Premiere of Rothko Drama Red Tony Award nominee Alfred Molina will repeat his work as abstract-impressionist painter Mark Rothko opposite Tony Award nominee Jonathan Groff in the Mark Taper Forum production of Red this August in Los Angeles.

John Logan's Tony Award-winning play will feature Groff as Rothko's protege Ken. Eddie Redmayne originated the role in London and on Broadway, earning both the Tony and Olivier Awards for his performance. Molina was Tony-nominated for his fiery turn as Rothko.

Director Michael Grandage, who also staged the Donmar Warehouse and Broadway productions, will helm Red in Los Angeles. Performances begin Aug. 1 for a run through Sept. 9. It officially opens Aug. 12.

Groff is a Tony nominee for Spring Awakening. He recently appeared Off-Broadway in the world premiere of Jeff Talbott's The Submission and is known for his work on "Glee" and the London production of Deathtrap.

The Donmar Warehouse production earned Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design (Christopher Oram),  Best Lighting Design (Neil Austin), Best Sound Design (Adam Cork) and Best Direction (Grandage).
