News Josefina Scaglione to Exit West Side Story; Amengual Is Broadway's Next Maria Newcomer Sarah Amengual will make her Broadway debut as Maria in the Tony Award-nominated revival of West Side Story. The recent college graduate will succeed Tony Award nominee Josefina Scaglione, who will depart the production Sept. 19.

At the age of 21, Argentinean actress Scaglione created the role of Maria in the current revival of West Side Story, which first debuted at the National Theatre in Washington, DC, December 2008 prior to its Broadway return in February 2009. She earned a Tony Award nomination for her work in the classic musical.

Amengual is a recent graduate of the University of Miami and has appeared regionally in Les Miserables, Parade, Ruthless and Rent. She will join the Broadway cast of West Side Story Sept. 21.

Under the direction of original librettist Arthur Laurents, West Side Story features Matthew Hydzik as Tony, Natalie Cortez as Anita, John Arthur Green as Riff and George Akram as Bernardo.

The cast also includes Jeremy Jordan, Steve Bassett, Kyle Brenn, Mike Cannon, Kyle Coffman, Sara Dobbs, Wes Hart, Michael Kleeman, Ron Piretti, Colt Prattes, Manuel Santos, Lee Sellars, Ryan Steele, Greg Vinkler, Mikey Winslow, Mark Zimmerman, Deanna Aguinaga, Shawn Burgess, Isaac Calpito, Haley Carlucci, Jace Coronado, Kristine Covillo, Desirée Davar, Stephen Diaz, Lindsay Dunn, Michael D. Jablonski, Marina Lazzaretto, Renée Marino, Matthew Marks, Mileyka Mateo, Skye Mattox, Kaitlin Mesh, Shina Ann Morris, Angelina Mullins, Kat Nejat, Patrick Ortiz, Pamela Otterson, Waldemar Quinones-Villanueva, Alex Ringler, Sam Rogers, Brendon Stimson, Tanairi Sade Vazquez and Michael Williams.

The current revival of West Side Story opened at the Palace Theatre March 19, 2009. A national tour will launch in October in Detroit, MI. West Side Story has music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Laurents. The staging retains the original choreography of late director Jerome Robbins, which has been restaged by Joey McKneely.
