Classic Arts News Joyce Wein, Co-Creator of Jazz Festivals, Dies Joyce Wein, who collaborated with her husband George Wein in creating and running music festivals around the world, died on August 15, the Associated Press reports. She was 76.
Wein trained as a biochemist and worked at Massachusetts General Hospital and Columbia Medical School before marrying Wein in 1959. She then joined Wein, who had pioneered the outdoor music festival with the Newport Jazz Festival in 1954, in founding the Newport Folk Festival, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the Hampton Jazz Festival, and other events.

She also helped to found the New York Coalition of 100 Black Women, according to the AP.
