News Julia Murney and David Zippel Join Encompass New Opera Theatre's Alan Menken Tribute Julia Murney and David Zippel have joined the Oct. 21 musical celebration of Tony and Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken, which will be presented by Encompass New Opera Theatre at the National Arts Club.

The evening begins with cocktails at 6 PM, followed by a 7 PM performance celebrating Menken's life and career in the theatre. Sheldon Harnick and Maury Yeston are the honorary chairs for the event.

The evening promises performances and recollections by Murney (Wicked, Closer Than Ever), lyricist Zippel (City of Angels), Malcolm Gets (Story of My Life), Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba (Contact, Curtains), Tituss Burgess (The Little Mermaid), Tony-winning composer Maury Yeston (Nine, Grand Hotel), Lindsay Mendez (Dogfight), Tony-winning Newsies lyricist Jack Feldman, Tony-nominated Sister Act and Leap of Faith lyricist Glenn Slater, Ron Raines (Follies), Scott Coulter, Lisa Livesay (Wicked), Klea Blackhurst and Jason Graae.

The music director/pianist is Beth Ertz, who will be joined by John Miller on bass.

Alan Menken has earned eight Academy Awards, ten Grammys, seven Golden Globes and a 2012 Tony Award for Newsies. His works for the stage include Sister Act, A Leap of Faith, Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Weird Romance and A Christmas Carol.

Menken's Academy Award-winning compositions include "Under the Sea" from Disney's "The Little Mermaid," "A Whole New World" from "Aladdin," the title song from "Beauty and the Beast" and "Colors of the Wind" from "Pocahontas." His screen musicals also include "Newsies," "Hercules," "Enchanted" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," which was later adapted for the stage.
