The Broadway revival of M. Butterfly, starring Clive Owen and directed by Tony winner Julie Taymor, celebrates its official opening October 26. The Tony-winning David Henry Hwang drama began performances October 7 at the Cort Theatre.
Oscar nominee Owen returns to Broadway as French diplomat Rene Gallimard, who falls for a mysterious Beijing opera sing named Song Liling. Taking on the role of his lover is Jin Ha, who recently appeared in the Chicago company of Hamilton.
Song’s true nature, including gender identity and allegiance, is revealed over the course of the two’s decades-long relationship. The new staging incorporates elements inspired by the real-life affair that served as the initial springboard for the piece.
