Katharine McPhee Sits Down With Sara Bareilles Before First Waitress Bow | Playbill

Ahead of her official Broadway debut April 10, new Waitress star Katharine McPhee sat down with the musical’s Tony- and Grammy-nominated composer, Sara Bareilles, to discuss what goes into taking on the central role of Jenna.

“My brain exploded, and you did warn me that it would explode,” McPhee tells Bareilles, who has played two limited engagements in the musical herself (the second ending last month).

The Smash and Scorpion star revealed what makes her most nervous about taking the Brooks Atkinson Theatre stage: not knowing where to go from scene to scene, and breaking character in a fit of the giggles.

Bareilles provided some words and wisdom and comfort: If you don’t know where you’re going, “someone will literally come and push you there,” and breaking does happen occasionally (and when it does, the audience will love it).
