Classic Arts News Kathleen Battle Replaces Ailing Jessye Norman in Ottawa Gala Soprano Jessye Norman has canceled an appearance at Ottawa's National Arts Centre on October 1 for "reasons of health," the NAC announced. She has been replaced on the program by another star soprano: Kathleen Battle.
The gala event also includes performances by the National Arts Centre Orchestra, conducted by music director Pinchas Zuckerman, and Canadian contralto Susan Platts, who is Norman's prot_g_e in the Rolex Mentor and Prot_g_ Initiative, a program that links world-class artists with up-and-coming performers.

Battle has performed at the Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera House, Metropolitan Opera (from which she was famously banned in 1994), and other leading opera houses, and with the New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and Boston Symphony. She has won five Grammy awards and an Emmy.

Ticket holders who wish to return their tickets because of the change can receive a refund or credit toward another event.
