News Kenyan Musician Wainaina Will Star in His Musical Mo Faya at NYMF Casting has been announced for Kenyan singer-songwriter Eric Wainaina's Mo Faya, which will play the TBG Theater as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival.

John Sibi-Okumu directs the U.S. premiere that has book, music and lyrics by Wainaina. Performances run Sept. 29-Oct. 12. The musical will be performed in English with Swahili.

The cast features a cast of Kenyan actors and musicians including writer Eric Wainaina (DJ Lwanda), Dan Ochieng (Professor), Peter Mwania (Mkwajo), Valerie Kimani (Syombua), and Mumbi Kaigwa (Ana Mali) with chorus members Melissa Ommeh, Carol Oyungu, Joshua Gachugia, Daniel Mwashigadi and Muthoni Mburu.

According to NYMF, "DJ Lwanda's voice rings out daily on local radio, leading and inspiring the Nairobi community of Kwa Maji. But Anna Mali, an avaricious real estate diva, craves the land beneath their slum. She seduces the fiery young DJ away with a job at a top nationwide station, and organizes a violent campaign to terrorize the people of Kwa Maji. When the government and media turn a blind eye to the decapitated bodies in the streets, DJ Lwanda must return home to expose the truth. But at what cost?"

Band members include Isaac Omamo (guitar), Patrick Nanjero (bass), Marvin Mutisya (drums) and Benson Kararu (keys).

Daniel Mwashigadi will choreograph Mo Faya, which has a creative team including Ken Larson (set design), Mike Inwood (lighting designer) and Timothy Rimbui (sound designer). For tickets phone (212) 352-3101 or visit NYMF. TBG Theatre is located at 312 West 36th Street in Manhattan.
