News King David to Play New York's Promise Theater in April David Sanborn's King David, a musical retelling of the biblical story of King David, will make its New York premiere April 9 at the Promise Theater on East 91st Street.

The family-friendly musical will play the East Side venue through June 27. Ellen Sanborn directs.

In King David, Sanborn, according to press notes, "impersonates the voices of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sean Connery, Jimmy Stewart, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Robert DeNiro, Antonio Banderas, Gene Kelly, Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey and others to depict key characters in this epic Biblical tale. The production [is] taken word-for-word from a translation of the Hebrew Scriptures."

The production features a script and original score by David Sanborn and Ellen Sanborn. The creative team also includes orchestrator/associate arranger David Onn-San, sound designer Bernard Fox, lighting designer Matthew Miller and costume and scenic designer Elizabeth "Lisa" Richards. The production stage manager is Melanie T. Morgan.

In a statement David Sanborn said, "We decided to write this script because King David is our favorite warrior-poet. In many ways, his Psalms are his intimate diary. We loved the idea of writing a musical that adapted the very lyrics that David recorded when he faced his various trials. As we researched the story, we realized no one could really compete with the vibrancy and poignancy of the dialogue recorded in the most popular book in history."

Show times are Tuesdays at 7 PM, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 8 PM, and Saturdays at 2 PM and 8 PM. Promise Theater is located in Manhattan at 316 East 91st Street. For tickets, priced $45, visit www.kingdavidmusical.com or call (212) 352-3101.
