News Krieger and Birkenhead to Have July 18 Reading of New Musical The Flamingo Kid Composer Henry Krieger and lyricist Susan Birkenhead will hold a New York reading of the first act of their new musical, The Flamingo Kid, on July 18, Birkenhead told Playbill.com columnist Harry Haun.

The reading will be directed by Michael Mayer, who has also penned the book with co-librettist James Magruder. Spamalot star Christian Borle is being sought to play the lead role. The 1984 film "The Flamingo Kid" starred Matt Dillon as a working-class Brooklyn teenager who takes a summer job at a ritzy country club. There he meets a slick mentor figure (played by Richard Crenna) who teaches the boy about silk shirts, fast cars, poker and how to get ahead in life. The boy's aspirations for a better life eventually lead to clashes with his proud, resentful father.

Birkenhead and Krieger worked together on the musical version of Moonstruck, which has been haunting the edges of Broadway for some years. Mayer and Birkenhead previously collaborated on The Triumph of Love.
