The production of the classic Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical will play Paris' Théâtre du Châtelet Feb. 15-20, 2010, according to the theatre's official website.
Scott Thomas previously told the New York Daily News that the production would be in English. The award-winning actress will sing "Send in the Clowns" in the haunting musical that was inspired by Ingmar Bergman's film "Smiles of a Summer Night."
Directed by Lee Blakeley with choreography by Andrew George, the cast will also feature David Curry as Henrik Egerman, Rebecca Bottone as Anne Egerman, Lambert Wilson as Fredrik Egerman, Francesca Jackson as Petra, Nicholas Garrett as Count Carl-Magnus Malclom, Deanne Meek as Countess Charlotte Malcolm, Celeste de Veazey as Fredrika Armfeldt, Leslie Caron as Madame Armfeldt, Damian Thantrey as Mr. Lindquist, Kate Valentine as Mrs. Nordstrom, James Edwards as Mr. Erlanson and Daphné Touchais as Mrs. Segstrom. Jonathan Stockhammer will conduct.
The 1973 Tony Award-winning musical about the foolishness of love and the need to connect has a score set in waltz time.
A Little Night Music — featuring a score by Sondheim and a book by Wheeler — originally opened at Broadway's Shubert Theatre on Feb. 25, 1973, with a cast that included Glynis Johns as Desiree, Len Cariou as Fredrik and Hermione Gingold as Madame Armfeldt. The show, directed by Harold Prince, garnered five 1973 Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical. The Sondheim score features the composer's best-known tune, "Send in the Clowns," as well as "Every Day a Little Death," "The Miller's Son" and "A Weekend in the Country." *
The Broadway revival of Sondheim and Wheeler's Tony-winning Night Music will play a Jujamcyn theatre. Tony Award winner Trevor Nunn will direct the revival. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin in October with an opening some time in December. Dates are "tentative," according to a recent Equity casting notice.
Producers are David Babani for Chocolate Factory Productions; Andrew Fell; Frankel, Viertel, Baruch, Routh Group.
The production will also feature musical supervision by Carolyn Humphris, musical direction by Tom Murray and choreography by Lynne Page, the same team behind Nunn's London production of Night Music, which officially opened Dec. 3, 2008, following previews that began Nov. 22, 2008 at the Garrick Theatre. Prior to the West End, the production played Southwark's Menier Chocolate Factory Nov. 22, 2008-March 8, 2009, where it completely sold out.
