News Kristin Scott Thomas Will Sing A Little Night Music in France Kristin Scott Thomas, the Academy Award-nominated actress who plays a fussy British matriarch in the new Noel Coward-inspired film "Easy Virtue," opening in a limited U.S. release on May 22, is expected to play Swedish actress Desiree Armfeldt in a new Paris production of A Little Night Music.

The bilingual actress — equally at ease in the films "The English Patient" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral," Broadway's The Seagull, and such French films as "I've Loved You So Long" and "Tell No One" — told the New York Daily News that she will star in the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical in Paris in spring 2010. The production will be presented in English.

The staging has not been officially announced, and it was not immediately known at what venue the musical would play. (Indeed, Thomas did not explicitly say she would play Desiree, the actress who reunites with an old flame, but that lead role is the most obvious part for her. She'll sing "Send in the Clowns" in the haunting musical that was inspired by Ingmar Bergman's film "Smiles of a Summer Night.")

The 1973 Tony Award-winning musical about the foolishness of love and the need to connect has a score set in waltz time.

A new London production of A Little Night Music, directed by Trevor Nunn, is expected to get a Broadway spinoff in the fall. Nunn's London production of Night Music, which officially opened Dec. 3, 2008, following previews that began Nov. 22, 2008 at the Garrick Theatre. Prior to the West End, the production played Southwark's Menier Chocolate Factory Nov. 22, 2008-March 8, 2009, where it sold out.

A Little Night Music — featuring music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by Wheeler — originally opened at Broadway's Shubert Theatre on Feb. 25, 1973, with a cast that included Glynis Johns as Desiree, Len Cariou as Fredrik and Hermione Gingold as Madame Armfeldt. The show, directed by Harold Prince, garnered five 1973 Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical. The Sondheim score features the composer's best-known tune, "Send in the Clowns," as well as "Every Day a Little Death," "The Miller's Son" and "A Weekend in the Country."
