Yacalis's adaptation includes rhythmic drumming and dance intermixed with dialogue to tell the tragic tale of Pentheus, the king of Thebes, who imprisons the god Dionysus, mistaking him for one of his followers. The Vakhos is the only ancient Greek tragedy in which Dionysus (the Greek god of theatre) appears.

The cast features Open Fist Theatre Company members: Francis DellaVecchia, Martha Demson, Andrew Hamling Fabienne Hitz, Mary Kivala, Grant Mathis, Dale M'Hall, Ana Rey, Paulene Smith and Pete Smith.
