LOS ANGELES -- One of the surprise hits of the summer season is a 50-year-old play by French surrealist Jean Cocteau, Indiscretions (or Les Parents Terribles).

Originally scheduled to close in late July, the production, at the Pacific Resident Theatre, has extended to Sept. 6.

First produced in Paris in 1939, the play was banned for its "scandalous" nature. The theme is "a mother-son bond that would make Oedipus blush," said one critic. The English-language version is directed by Daniel O'Connor and features Michael E. Rodgers and Kathleen Garrett.

Laurie Winer of the Los Angeles Times called the play "an improbably funny look at an incestuous family" and picked it as a Critic's Choice.

The Pacific Resident Theatre is located at 705 Venice Blvd. Performances are Thursday through Saturday 8 PM; Sunday 7 PM. Tickets are $20. Call (213) 660-TKTS. -- By Willard Manus
