A bilingual La Jolla cast will deliver separate English and Spanish language versions of Federico Garcia Lorca's Blood Wedding (Bodas de Sangre when it begins a one-month run at La Jolla Playhouse on June 4.
Directed by England's Mark Wing-Davey, with movement by Jean Isaacs, Blood Wedding will run in English June 4-July 2. The same 17- member cast will also do two performances in the play's original Spanish on June 21 and 23.
This is the opening production of the Playhouse's 2000 season, Anne Hamburger's first as artistic director.
Inspired by a newspaper account which Lorca read in the 1920s, this Spanish Romeo and Juliet deals with forbidden love and revenge. The protagonist is a young bride whose insatiable desire for her married lover draws her into the crossfire of two feuding families.
Featured in the cast are Lina Acosta, Anthony Diaz-Perez, Damian Baldet, Ivonne Coll, Jonathan Del Arco, Maribel Gonzalez, Bobby Plasencia, Onahoua Rodriguez and Winston Rocha, among others. Wing-Davey's directorial credits include the American premiere of The Skriker at the Public Theatre in New York and Mad Forest at the Manhattan Theatre Club.
Single tickets to the Playhouse's new season are now on sale. The Playhouse is located at La Jolla Village Drive at Torrey Pines Road. For tickets and information call (858) 550-1010 or visit www.lajollaplayhouse.com
