The Tonys have long been over and done with in New York City, but Los Angeles is just warming up to honor the best in West Coast theatre. The 2000 Ovation Awards will announce their nominations Sept. 25 at the new Colony Theatre.

Writer and performer Maripat Donovan, in full Late Night Catechism ensemblage, will host the ceremony. Donovan co-wrote the show in stars in the L.A. production, currently at the Coronet Theatre.

The Colony is located at 555 North Third Street in Burbank. Food and drinks will be served.

The Ovations themselves will be awarded Oct. 30 at the Ahmanson Theatre. First established by the Theatre League Alliance of Southern California in 1989, these prizes are given in 26 categories, separated in all cases, except acting, directing, choreography and writing, into large and intimate theatre divisions. Two achievement awards, the Career Achievement Award and the James A. Doolittle Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Theatre, are also included in the event.

* Last year, the comic marajuana musical Reefer Madness was the big Ovation winner with five awards including best musical in a small theatre (Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center's West Side Story won best musical in a large house). The Fountain Theatre's staging of Summer and Smoke and the Ahmanson's Fosse both received three prizes and Donald Margulies' Collected Stories was named best play in a large theatre.
