Classic Arts News Lake George Opera to Perform Rorem's Our Town Lake George Opera's summer 2006 season will feature the professional premiere of Ned Rorem's opera Our Town, the Saratoga Springs, New York, company announced.
Our Town, based on the classic Thornton Wilder play, will get its world premiere at Indiana University on February 24. The libretto is by poet J. D. McClatchy.

According to the university, the opera will be seen in the future at Opera Boston, the Aspen Music Festival, the North Carolina School for the Arts, and Festival Opera of Walnut Creek, California, which co-commisioned it with IU and Lake George Opera.

Lake George Opera's production, which runs July 1-9, will star Robert Swensen as the Stage Manager and Sarah Paige Hagstrom as Emily Webb.

The season will also include Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, running June 29-July 8, and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, paired with Cimarosa's one-man comedy Il maestro de cappella, running June 30-July 10.

On June 23, the company will host its annual benefit Opera Ball at the Gideon Hotel ballroom; on June 11, members of the company's Apprentice Artist program will perform on a cruise of Lake George while listeners enjoy champagne and strawberries. The young singers will also perform at a concert on July 8 featuring music by Mozart and a performance of Gian Carlo Menotti's The Medium.
