LOS ANGELES -- Tuesday Laboratory, a new group specializing in contemporary British theatre, will kick off its 1998 season with the American premiere of Jess Walters' Cockroach, Who? at the 24th Street Theatre on Feb. 21 at 8 PM.

Tuesday Laboratory, founded in 1994, is a nonprofit organization that has a mission, said a company spokesperson, "to provide a political and philosophical base for actors, writers and directors dedicated to creating a new style of performance and to return theatre to the heart of our cultural experience."

Cockroach, Who? is set in a grungy South London housing project and deals with a trio of tough young girls who wreak havoc on the elderly folks living there, until they finally meet their match in three bickering, tea-swilling hags at the local laundrette.

L. Zane directs a cast including Annie Abott, Ranjani Brow, Marnie Crossen, Sandra Kinder, Leonore Thomas and Ani Williams.

Walters' play was developed while she was a member of the Royal Court Young People's Theatre Writers' Group. It had its world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in Feb. 1997. The 24th Street Theatre is at 1117 West 24th St. in the N. University Park district. Performances are Thu.-Sat. at 8 PM and Sun. at 7 PM through Mar. 1, with additional performances March 12-13 and March 21-22. (The play is sharing a repertory schedule with the company's production of The Neighbor.) For tickets, $15, call (213) 660-8587.
