The Captain's Tiger , Athol Fugard's autobiographical story of a young writer, ends its latest pre-New York stop at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theatre Nov. 1. The play had one preview, Sept. 23, and officially opened Sept. 24.
The Captain's Tiger draws on Fugard's youth as an idealistic young writer penning his first novel aboard the S.S. Graigaur, a rusting tramp steamer bound for Asia. There he meets Donkeyman, the ship's Swahili crew member, and Betty, the story's heroine.
Tiger 's next stop is Off-Broadway's Manhattan Theatre Club, Dec. 15, 1998-Jan. 5, 1999. There is no word yet on who will join Fugard, who plays the writer, on stage in New York. The Kennedy Center cast features Felicity Jones as Betty and Tony Todd as Donkeyman.
May 5-24, 1998, New Jersey's McCarter Theatre hosted the drama, which opened there May 8. Tiger premiered in Pretoria, South Africa in fall 1997.
Other plays by Fugard include The Blood Knot , Boesman and Lena , The Road To Mecca , Master Harold...and the Boys and Valley Song , which had its U.S. premiere at the McCarter. -- By Robert Simonson
