The Tempest (Off-Broadway at the Delacorte Theater). Laura Benanti, Norm Lewis, Carson Elrod, Jeff Hiller and Jacob Ming-Trent star in Lear deBessonet and Todd Almond's new musical adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, as part of the Public Theater's new Public Works initiative. The Tempest is conceived and directed by Lear and features book, music and lyrics by Almond, who also stars as Ariel. The production is inspired by a 1916 event at City College, which featured professional actors working with 1,500 city residents who united for an adaptation of The Tempest, billed as Caliban by the Yellow Sands. Wanda's Monster (Off-Broadway at Vineyard Theatre's Dimson Theatre). Wanda's Monster "introduces an imaginative little girl named Wanda and her unexpected bond with a fuzzy purple monster as she learns acceptance and friendship." Based on the award-winning children's book by Eileen Spinelli, the musical features music and lyrics by singer, songwriter and children's recording artist Laurie Berkner and a book by Barbara Zinn Krieger. Harbor (Off-Broadway at 59E59 Theaters). Chad Beguelin's Harbor stars Randy Harrison, Erin Cummings, Paul Anthony Stewart and Alexis Molnar. Here's how it's billed: "When fifteen-year-old Lottie and her ne'er-do-well mother Donna drop in unannounced on the beautiful Sag Harbor home of Donna's brother and his new husband, all hell breaks loose. The bonds between kith and kin are tested in this alternately biting and touching comedy about the constantly shifting nature of the meaning of family." Visit PrimaryStages.org.
