News Laura Benanti Lands TV Role as Mom to DC Comics' "Supergirl" Tony Award winner Laura Benanti, who will be seen in the upcoming Rockettes show New York Spring Spectacular, is heading back to the screen, Deadline.com reports. She's been cast in a recurring role on the new superhero television series "Supergirl."

Also seen on the ABC series "Nashville," Benanti's next television appearance will be for the CBS pilot "Supergirl" in which she'll portray Alura Zor-El, mother to Kara (Supergirl), who sends her daughter to Earth to escape the fate of a doomed Krypton.

Melissa Benoist will play Kara, who receives guidance from her mother across time as her own powers develop.

Warner Bros. TV is shepherding the project from writers and executive producers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler.

Benanti is a Tony Award winner for her performance in the 2008 revival of Gypsy. She earned Tony Award nominations for her work in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Into the Woods and Swing! She has also appeared in "The Sound of Music Live!," "Elementary," "Royal Pains" and more. She will return to Broadway in 2016 for a revival of She Loves Me.
