Tony winner Laura Benanti (She Loves Me, Gypsy) first impersonated Melania Trump on the July 19 episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbet, after Mrs. Trump’s appearance at the Republican National Convention.

On October 18 Benanti joined host Colbert “via satellite” as the potential next First Lady to talk about Billy Bush and her husband’s comments about women.

Colbert first addressed the fact that Benanti bears a striking resemblance to Melania during her visit to his show March 28. After the RNC, Mrs. Trump underwent much criticism for allegedly plagiarizing Michelle Obama’s speech in her own. Colbert capitalized on his earlier discovery and invited Benanti to his show for the July sketch, where she first unveiled her impersonation.

Aside from her most recent Tony nomination for She Loves Me this past year, Benanti has been nominated four other times with one win for the 2008 revival of Gypsy. Benanti has also done television work, playing Alura Zor-El in Supergirl (which also stars Tony nominee Jeremy Jordan) and Sadie Stone in Nashville (which also starred Tony nominee Will Chase).
