Sturgis Warner directs the tale of a severely dysfunctional New York family. The cast features 29th Street Rep artistic director David Mogentale as well as ensemble member Heidi James and guest actors Carolyn Michelle Smith, Suzanne Toren and Todd Wall.
Lenny & Lou are two emotionally stunted brothers tormented by each other, and by their domineering, hectoring mother, who does things like call them "lover" and phone them in the middle of the night with requests for bananas. When feckless, selfish Lenny believes he may have gone too far in his frightening of the old lady, he sends tightly wound accountant Lou over to her apartment—with unexpected results.
The play, by turns tragic, violent and farcical, was previously seen at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre in Washington, DC. It was nominated for the Charles MacArthur Award for Best Play and Best Resident Play by the Helen Hayes Awards organization.
Past 29th Street Rep productions have included Fool for Love, In the Belly of the Beast, Pick Up Ax, Tracers and the first New York production of Tracy Letts' Killer Joe.
