At the 2016 Obie Awards May 23, Hamilton’s Leslie Odom, Jr. and his wife, Invisible Thread star Nicolette Robinson, opened up about how they are preparing for the Tony Awards ceremony on June 12. Odom, Jr. is nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Aaron Burr.

“We’ve been trying to do it in the most relaxed way,” said Robinson. “We’re trying to just stay true to what we love.”

“The day of the ceremony is going to be a lot about preparation,” she continued. “We’ll have everything ready: what we’re wearing and who’s coming. It’s almost like our wedding day. Our thing on the wedding day was to just wake up, let the day happen, enjoy it and be present. That’s the goal.”

Odom, Jr. also likened the upcoming Tony Awards to the day they tied the knot. “We’ve had a couple of big days being together, like our wedding day…[and] we like to take it easy,” he said.

“You do all the preparation that you can for a day like that; you choose your outfit; you choose what you’re going to eat that morning. You make as many decisions as you can beforehand so that on the day, you can just release and enjoy yourself,” he continued. “You can let other people take the wheel. That’s the way to enjoy those days best.”

The couple’s laid-back philosophy is reflected in the way they spent Tony nominations day April 28. Rather than watch the announcements, the duo went to their local breakfast spot and shared a relaxed meal before checking their phones.

“On the morning when the Tony [nominations were announced], we went to breakfast before we turned our phones on and made sure that we were in the right head space,” said Robinson. “[Leslie] really wanted to do that. I’m an Aries, so I wanted to [check] immediately. But we did it the way that he felt like we could start the season off well.”

“I think the best part for me, being along this ride with him, is just to enjoy it,” continued the actress. “We’ve been meeting such amazing people.”

How Hamilton's Leslie Odom, Jr. Took His Shot With Nicolette Robinson

Robinson and Odom, Jr. were at the Obies to celebrate her acclaimed performance in Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews’ Invisible Thread. The production, directed by Diane Paulus, played Off-Broadway’s Second Stage Theatre this past winter. The actress wasn’t able to confirm what was up next for the show, but said she had her hopes on further performances. “I have no idea, but we’ll see,” she said. “I don’t think it’s over, but I think they’re trying to figure out what space it will work in next. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”

Both she and Odom, Jr. were elated to be celebrating at the Obies this awards season. “Off-Broadway is the dream,” said Robinson. “The fact that I’ve been able to do two Off-Broadway shows is such a dream. The community is so badass!”
