News Leslie Uggams Is Lena Horne in NYC Readings of New Musical Play, Stormy Weather June 14-17 She already had her own one-woman Broadway show, The Lady and Her Music, now Lena Horne becomes the subject of another entertainment — a play with music called Stormy Weather: The Story of Lena Horne, getting a public workshop presentation June 14-17.

Tony Award winner Leslie Uggams (Hallelujah, Baby!, Thoroughly Modern Millie) stars as legendary singer actress Horne in the presentation by Amas Musical Theatre (Donna Trinkoff, producing director). Sharleen Cooper Cohen's script was suggested by the book "Lena Horne, Entertainer," by Leslie Palmer.

"The play will use many of the classic Lena Horne songs to tell the tale of the legendary beauty," according to the announcement.

Orchestrations are by Luther Henderson with musical direction by David Alan Bunn.

Under the direction of Victoria Pero and with choreography by Hope Clarke (Caroline, or Change), the presentation is free to the public.

Horne, whose smoky-rich voice and bright personality won her a Best Actress (Musical) Tony Award nomination for Jamaica, and a Special Tony Honor for Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music in 1981, worked in film, concerts, nightclubs and on Broadway in a long career. She has retired from active performing. Performances play the Signature Theatre at 555 W. 42nd Street, June 14 at 3 PM, June 15 at 3 PM and June 17 at 3 PM and 7:30 PM.
