Tammy Blanchard is currently in negotiations with producer Robert Fox to co-star in the upcoming revival of Gypsy starring Bernadette Peters. Variety reports that the actress, who recently portrayed a young Judy Garland in the ABC movie "Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows," is under consideration for the role of Gypsy Rose Lee in the eagerly awaited musical revival, which will feature direction by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes.
Blanchard won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries/Movie for her work as Judy Garland in the aforementioned TV film. She also garnered Golden Globe, AFI TV and Golden Satellite award nominations for that performance. A New Jersey native, Blanchard's other credits include "Stealing Harvard," "We Were the Mulvaneys" and three years on the CBS daytime serial "Guiding Light."
Two-time Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters will headline the much-in the-news Gypsy revival, which is aiming for a 2003 Broadway opening. Although no theatre has been announced, there is a possibility that the Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents musical may play the Shubert Theatre, which now houses the long-running revival of Kander and Ebb's Chicago. The last Broadway mounting of the famed musical Gypsy cast "Cagney & Lacey" star Tyne Daly in the role created by Ethel Merman. The 1989 Daly revival won a Tony for Best Revival of a Musical as well as one for its leading lady.
